- Democracy: A system in Government where all citizens of a country (18+) can
vote for who they want to be in parliament.
Different levels of government:
National Government:
- The legislative branch: makes the laws of the country and consists of the
parliament.
- The executive branch: leads the country and consists of the president, deputy
president and ministers.
- The judicial branch: ensures that justice is served and enforces laws.
Provincial government:
- Each province has its own government namely, provincial government
- Each province has a Premier to lead its government and legislative branch
- Provincial governments are bound by laws set by the national government
- They can also develop their own laws and policies for their province
Local government:
- Each province is divided into municipalities.
- South Africa has 283 municipalities.
- The objectives of municipalities are, among other things, to:
✓ Provide a democratic and accountable government for local
communities.
✓ Ensure that services are provided to communities.
✓ Promote social and economic development.
Municipality: a district, town or city with a local government.
