ASSIGNMENT 50

YEAR MODULE 2023

, CONTEXTUAL
QUESTIONNAIRE

,1. Describe the school at which you did your practical teaching
(location, age, facilities, how many learners are enrolled at the
school, how many teachers teach at the school, language of
learning and teaching, etc.)
• The school is a public school situated in a community called
and the enrolment is 1233 learners with 574 boys and 659
girls between the ages of 13 and 19. The school has 44
teachers and 2 campuses for grades 8-9 and grades 10-12.

2. Describe the classroom in which you did your practical teaching
(size, facilities, learning and teaching support materials, classroom
atmosphere, etc.)
• The classroom is small compared to the number of learners it
has to accommodate. Learners share learning materials as well
as tables and chairs. The classroom atmosphere is not
conducive because there are no charts and its overcrowded-
there is no space for the educator to walk around and check
the work he/she gives learners.

3. Describe the learners you taught during your practical teaching
(number per class, degree of readiness to learn, their home
environmental conditions etc.)
• Theres about 40-50 learners in every class, with an exception
an exception of about of 60 or more in some classes. Hence
some classes are eager to learn while others weren’t so eager.
Learners had mixed feelings and attitudes when it came to
being educated. Since the school is located in a township
where most people are unemployed and stay at home, majority
of learners saw no point of going to school. They believed that
it was a waste of time since there was a huge possibility for
them to stay at home like their brothers and sisters.

4. Describe your mentor/subject/learning area teacher (knowledge,
teaching experience, helpfulness, guidance, etc.).
• My mentor is a Mathematics teacher who has been in the teaching
profession for 20 years. Although he is very much experienced in
this field, he offered no help in grooming me. He threw me in the

, deep end so I could learn the ropes by myself. Even though I had to
learn most things by myself, that helped me realise the importance
of teaching and the responsibility it gives one.

5. Provide a brief account of your overall teaching practice experience
(positive and/or negative).

• I enjoyed my practicals because I got to bond with the learners. This
was very essential to my academic and personal growth. I got to
learn selflessness and to think of other people before I thought of
myself. Responsibility was also a lesson I learnt because I was
assigned certain responsibilities as a student teacher. I enjoyed
observing and acquiring dos and donts I should be aware of, in my
own classes.

6. Did you conduct yourself in terms of the South African Council of
Educators Code of Conduct?

• Yes , I was professional with both learners and teachers.
