, ACTIVITY 1
1.1.1 The environment refers to the natural world, including all living and non-living things that exist on Earth. It
encompasses everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink, the land we walk on, the animals and plants
around us, and the climate that supports life. The environment is complex and interconnected, and human activities have
a significant impact on it.
1.1.2 Environmental education is the process of teaching and learning about the environment and the challenges facing
it. It aims to increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues and to promote responsible behaviour
that can help protect the environment. Environmental education can take many forms, from formal classroom
instruction to first-hand experiences in nature.
1.1.3 The Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch that is characterized by the significant impact of human
activities on the Earth's ecosystems. The term Anthropocene reflects the idea that humans have become a dominant
force in shaping the environment, and that our activities have caused significant changes to the Earth's ecosystems,
including climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss.
1.1.4 Sustainability refers to the ability of humans to meet our current needs without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs. It involves finding ways to use natural resources in a responsible and
efficient manner, reducing waste and pollution, and promoting social and economic equity. Sustainable practices seek to
balance economic growth, social development, and environmental protection in a way that supports long-term well-being.
1.1.5 The holistic environment refers to the interconnectedness of all things in the natural world. It recognizes that
everything in the environment is connected and that changes in one part of the system can have ripple effects
throughout the whole. A comprehensive approach to the environment considers the complex interrelationships between
humans, other living organisms, and the physical and chemical components of the environment. It emphasizes the
importance of understanding and addressing environmental issues in a comprehensive and integrated way.
