Ch. 2 - Understanding Motivation and Emotion - Reeve 7th Ed. A+ Guaranteed
PHILOSOPHICAL ORIGINS OF MOTIVATIONAL CONCEPTS The Roots of contemporary motivation and emotion owe their origin to the ancient Greeks— Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The most primitive (biological) level, the appetitive aspect contributed bodily appetites and desires, such as hunger and sex. The social level, the competitive aspect contributed socially referenced standards, such as honor and shame. At the highest level, the calculating aspect contributed decision-making capacities, such as reason and choosing. These three aspects of the psyche motivated and explained different realms of behaviour.
