EDS3701
ASSIGNMENT 2

SEMESTER 1 2023
UNIQUE CODE: 881830
DUE: 15 MAY 2023

, a) EDS3701 is offered strictly online. Explain what online learning is
according to your own understanding? Include both the advantages and
disadvantages of this learning method. Use your own experiences of
learning at UNISA.

Online learning refers to learning that is delivered electronically through various
multimedia and Internet platforms and applications. It is used interchangeably with
other terms such as web-based learning, e-learning, computer-assisted instruction,
and Internet-based learning. It’s an alternative way to study at university, and instead
of going to classrooms, you study at home, or wherever you choose, via the internet.
Classes, teaching materials, support, and assessments are all delivered online. Often,
these are also recorded so they can be re-watched.

This type of education requires computers, laptops, or smartphones, and a high-speed
internet connection. Online learning is also used in schools and colleges.

Advantages.

Students have the freedom to juggle their careers and school because they aren't tied
down to a fixed schedule. In a traditional classroom setting, class meeting times are
set, and the student has no power over this, forcing them to work their schedules
around these dates. Most people who choose online learning tend to have other
commitments, and prefer this mode of learning as it gives them power over how they
will delegate their time towards their different projects

Achieving a good balance between school and your personal life is important for
managing stress and making it easier to focus on your academics. Although some
aspects of your education may require you to be available during set times, other
aspects allow you to create your own schedule, allowing you more flexibility when
taking breaks. Learning online also means you’re not commuting to and from school,
giving you more free time.

Online learning also provides learners with the opportunity to interact with a diverse
community of peers and instructors from around the world. This can help to broaden
learners' perspectives and expose them to different viewpoints and ideas. Additionally,
online learning can help to promote inclusivity, as learners from different backgrounds
