14.1 Inleiding
Bij icterus (geelzucht ) is het gehalte aan bilirubine (galkleurstof) in het bloed en de weefsels te hoog. Dit leidt in
geval van lichte verhoging tot een gele verkleuring van alleen het oogwit, in ernstiger gevallen verkleurt de huid
van het gehele lichaam geel.

Icterus is geen diagnose maar een symptoom, zoals anemie en cyanose dat ook zijn. Verschillende
aandoeningen/situaties kunnen de oorzaak van het geelzien zijn.



Het afbraakproduct van hemoglobine is bilirubine. Met name in de lever wordt hemoglobine gemetaboliseerd tot
