G150/PHA1500 ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE MOD 4 DISCUSSION Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), including antibiotic resistance, is the resistance of a microbe to an antimicrobial medication that used to be effective in treating or preventing an infection caused by that microbe. Bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics There are three ways they can become resistant: natural resistance, genetic mutation, one species acquiring resistance from another. A person can’t become resistant to antibiotics. It’s the microbe or bacteria that becomes resistant. There are about a million deaths a year due to resistant bacteria. There are several causes here are a few, misuse or missing doses of antibiotics when prescribed. Inappropriate prescription of the drug, lowering the concentration levels of the drug aids in AMR (Antimicrobial resistance, antibiotic resistance) We should use antibiotics as needed ONLY. For example, we usually go see the physician for antibiotics when we have a common cold, but it just isn’t the right care for it as colds aren’t bacterial infections. Inappropriate use of antibiotics in animals contributes to the spread of Antibiotic resistant germs. A resistance s growing among humans and animals due to their environment, through the spread of contamination in our environment as in ventilation in our healthcare facilities. Animals carry many bacteria’s in their intestines. As well as in their poop which some farmers use as fertilizer for their crops. That’s why proper food handling is essential. So, the spread can start through animals based on how they are cared for during farming, not to mention pollution in our environment, we must also practice good hand hygiene. I believe if physicians would know their patients condition well enough to know how long they should take antibiotics and if they should stop regimen sooner. (case by case scenario) w/o effective antibiotics western medicine wouldn’t be the same because we would be unable to treat infections or diseases. Antibiotics increases development of yeast infections. Excessive exposure to the antibiotics aids in resistance of antibiotics. One complication is the Immune system would be at risk of not being able to protect the body. When the body has over exposure to antibiotics they won’t be as effective to fight disease(s) because the bacteria may have become resistant to the drug. If this happens and another type of antibiotic can’t be administered, then death could occur. Alternative meds may be expensive or not an option for patients. Physicians can give lower dosages of antibiotics have patients use for only what it’s needed for. I think that physicians should give less antibiotics and only if there is a necessary need for it, as for livestock animals I’m not sure they should keep giving animals antibiotics. I really don’t need my chicken so big that I don’t recognize it. Nor do we need animals passing on pathogens to humans. I do think we should decrease giving antibiotics to both humans and animals!! This will aid in preventing resistance to the antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance: causes, consequences and means to limit it. (n.d.). Retrieved February 27, 2018, from Rodriguez, D. (2010, September 14). The Danger of Antibiotic Resistance. Retrieved February 27, 2018, from
