SUS 1501 : 876260
Assignment 6 : Greenies : Environmental ethics.

1. Tell us what your original answer to the question above was AND why;
- My original answer was E.
This perspective acknowledges that polar bears may not be directly important to human
welfare, but that their decline is indicative of broader ecological changes that will
ultimately have significant impacts on human society. Climate change is a major threat to
human welfare, and the loss of polar bears is just one symptom of this larger problem.
Addressing climate change and protecting vulnerable species like the polar bear is
therefore seen as a necessary step in promoting the long-term welfare of humans and
other species.
2. Tell us what your current answer is AND why;
- I think I am between E and F now.
F emphasizes the intrinsic value of polar bears and their rights as living beings, option e
takes a more pragmatic approach, recognizing that the health of the planet's ecosystems
is essential to human welfare and that the loss of polar bears is an indicator of a larger
ecological crisis.

3. Answer the question: "So where do I fit in in relation to this?" (Think back to the
section on virtue ethics); and finally
- Human beings are a central part of the complex ecological systems that support life on
this planet. My actions have significant impacts on other species and on the health of the
planet as a whole. In the context of the loss of the polar bear population, human
activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gases are
contributing to the warming of the planet and the melting of Arctic sea ice. This in turn is
threatening the habitat and food sources of polar bears, and ultimately leading to the
decline in their population. I have to take action in order to make sure that I don’t
contribute towards climate change or the loss of species, the well-being of humans and
other species are intertwined, and protecting the natural world is a necessary part of
promoting human welfare and flourishing.

4. Write a comment on what you think about my preferred answer AND of course
explain why you think this.
- Think of potential consequences of the loss of the polar bear population, not only for
the polar bears themselves but also for the broader ecological systems that support life
on this planet. While it is true that the loss of polar bears may not have a direct impact
on the day-to-day lives of many individuals, it is important to recognize that the health
of the planet's ecosystems is intimately connected to human well-being. The loss of
polar bears is just one symptom of a larger ecological crisis that is threatening the
stability of the planet's natural systems, which in turn has the potential to undermine
food security, water resources, public health, and many other aspects of human life. Do
we have a responsibility to protect and care for other species, even if they do not directly
impact our own lives? What kind of world do we want to create for future generations?
