MNG3702 – EXAM 2022

, Question 1

1.1 Edward Hall stated that an organisations culture is like an iceberg as with the top
of the iceberg you can see it but beneath the water you have no idea what you
can see.
His analogy had 3 layers made up off visible artefacts, espoused values and
norms and taken for granted assumptions.
Walmarts visible artefacts is their large stores that offer consumers a wide range
of products and the compapany logo which is a big “W”
Walmarts espoused values comprise of their great customer service, their ethical
values in all their operations.
Walmarts taken for granted assumptions could be that consumers will always
find items that they are looking for, their prices are the lowest in the competing
market and they will always receive great customer service.

Question 2
2.1 absorptive capacity is the ability of an organisation acknowledge the value of
new external information to assimilate it and to use it to address business problems.
2.2 The four dimensions of absorptive capacity are acquisition of external information
which is the ability to acquire relevant information and they received this from
complaints from employees, local communities, environmentalists and suppliers. The
next dimension is assimilation of the information which is to analyse the information
and make sense of it. Walmart interpretation of this information meant that they
would need to do the following things. They would need to be more ethical, and more
socially and environmentally responsible. The next step is transformation of this
knowledge, and they did this by using their political might to benefit ordinary
customers in healthcare and energy savings and make people’s lives better. The last
dimension is applying new knowledge and Walmart did this by purchasing from
ethical suppliers at a higher price, having environmentally friendly store and being
more socially responsible.
