PLAN: Analyse the significance of the telling of stories within any novel
taught on the course so far.
Argument:
Therefore, throughout this essay I will make the case that, within the
novel Room, the telling of stories is significant in allowing the reader to
understand the struggles of characters, but only to an extent as the
narrator remains unreliable.
Topic sentences:
1. The significance of telling stories within the novel Room can be
seen through how Jack learns, and with each story he tells they
become more intellectual and imaginative, conveying how Jack
narration of storytelling allows him to enthuse his learning.
2. Following from this, telling stories is also significant within Room,
as it highlights the breakdown and lack of reality for ‘Ma’ and
‘Jack’.
3. Alternatively, I also believe the significance of telling stories within
Room is limited by Jack as a narrator; due to his age and rare
circumstances, he acts as a unreliable narrator, leaving the reader
to establish what is real and what Jack has made up, as often the
idea of storytelling, is purely fictional.
Key Quotes:
‘When I was a little kid I thought like a little kid, but now I’m five I know
everything’ (presents)
-Simile
-Dramatic irony how little he knows – childlike mindset
-Foreshadows the harsh truths of what he is going to learn now he is this
new age
-Use of past tense to show the story telling continued and he is the
central character to the story like he is to the novel; allows the reader to
understand how story telling is adapting as his character is
‘Stories are a different kind of true’ Ma – ‘Unlying’
-Emphasising how stories aren’t always to be trusted; like we can’t trust
Jack
-Stories are presented as the truth, and to Jack his stories are his reality;
shows the telling of stories significance as it is essentially was Jack
believes and creates as his reality until Ma reveals the truth – a new
story
‘I look back one more time. It's like a crater, a hole where something
happened. Then we go out the door.’ – Jack ‘living’
