1.1 Define the term translanguaging in your own words.
An approach that allows the interaction between two languages to communicate ideas,
information, and concepts in order to overcome language constraints. Translanguaging
implies that both languages are of equal status and contribute equally meaning making
using the learner’s full language repertoire.
1.2 Define the purpose of the study
The purpose of this study was to explore the enablers and constraints of using learner’s
home language as a support strategy to facilitate learning and teaching within multilingual
classroom and thereby developing both L1 and the English language within the framework
of additive multilingualism.

a) Learn key words in your students’ native languages
I will be the co-learner. Learn from the children about their language, cultural practices, and
their understanding of the world to create a translanguaging space. For some ELL students,
school may be the only place where they use their English skills, but it can also be very
isolating if no one takes an interest in their native language or culture. By creating an
environment that allows the use of their native language and experiences, combined with
other students’ languages and cultures all students can reach their full potential.
b) Label objects in the classroom in multiple languages.
This familiarizes students with the written forms of words they already know and use in
everyday conversation. By labeling objects in multiple languages, it allows bilingual students
to make connections between their native language and the one they are learning.
