Provide 5 characteristics of (or ‘rules’ for) a good title for a research article or a
research report. [5 marks]
1. The title should not be too long, five to ten words will do.
2. The title should not be so brief that it becomes obscure.
3. The title should convey the main focus of the article.
4. The title should convey the gist of the research.
5. The title may begin with a short and catchy phrase to catch peoples attention.
Activity 2:
The following title does not comply with the rules for a good title: ‘Morals down the
drain? A research study investigating the relationship between different variables of
moral development in South African adolescent boys and girls between 12 and 18
years of age’. Correct this title by providing a better title which complies with the
rules for a good title. [2]

Provide a provisional title for your research project. (You will probably change the
title a couple of times – a normal process as your knowledge and understanding
