to anticipate, so I allowed the feministic prejudices dictate how the course would be
conducted but regardless I chose it because I wanted to learn more about feminist
studies. I honestly admit that I was mistaken, however, this module has forever
altered not just my perception of myself, but also my stance on life.
Except from the students in my class, most people I know no one has any clue what
I'm talking about when I mention "intersectionality." In all honesty, prior to the
PowerPoint presentation or week 4, I had never even heard of what intersectionality
is. So, what is intersectionality, why is it significant, how does it influence identity?
Therefore, I would like to define this concept, according to Crenshaw (1991) it is the
study of how multiple identities interact or intersect to generate a new experience is
known as intersectionality. Women of colour, for example, are an amalgamation of
female and non - white identities. Understanding their perspectives necessitates a
consideration of gender, race, class, sexual orientation, physical capacity, and so on,
Intersectionality is a notion that recognizes that people's lives are multi-dimensional;
that they have several identities as well as multiple challenges. People do not exist in
a vacuum. A woman isn't just a woman, for example. She may be a 1st-generation
university student, Islamic, or a queer person, among other things. People can be
disadvantaged by numerous sources of oppression depending on their identities,
according to intersectionality (YW Boston). What is the significance of
intersectionality? It's crucial because, in order to have a more equal society, we, as
members of that society, must recognize that individuals are not one-dimensional in
order to not only comprehend but also welcome everyone into our community.
Without intersectionality, it's all too simple to generalize a specific group, such as "all
men feel" that same way or "every LBGTQIA+ person holds" a similar idea.
However, this oversimplification is not a realistic depiction of reality. Every individual
has several identities that influence them.
