1.1) In your own words, briefly explain why critical reading is referred to as an active process. (3)
Critical reading is referred to as an active process because it requires the reader to actively and
intentionally engage with the text rather than simply passively absorbing information. The
reader must analyze the text, question its assumptions and arguments, consider the author's
purpose and point of view, and evaluate the evidence presented when reading critically. The
reader must be fully present and mentally engaged in order to make connections and draw
conclusions based on their own knowledge and experience. Critical reading, in other words, is
an active process because it requires the reader to actively interact with the text rather than
simply allowing it to wash over them.
1.2) Discuss your understanding of the relationship between literary texts and language. Use
examples to clarify the relationship. (5)
Language and literature are two interconnected ideas. Literature is the study of written work,
whereas language is the study of sounds, words, and sentences. Literature exists solely because
of language. Literary texts and language have a complex and multifaceted relationship. Literary
texts are made with language, but they also shape and enrich it, serving as a means of
expression, preserving culture and values, and expanding the linguistic landscape. At the same
time, literary texts can have an impact on the evolution of language. William Shakespeare's
works, for example, have had a significant impact on the English language, with many of his
