Plagiarism
Plagiarism’ involves using someone else’s words or ideas without acknowledging the
source. Essentially, it is a representation that words are the student’s own, or an idea is
their original one, when the authorship can be attributed to someone else (Evans, 2012:
99). Plagiarism can involve the direct copying of an author’s exact words without
quotation marks. Frequently it also involves the omission of attributing the authorship
and source of those words (that is, without the correct citation being given). A common
example of plagiarism involves the student ‘cutting and pasting’ from an internet or other
electronic source into their assignment without quotation marks and or acknowledging
the source (Evans, 2012: 121).
Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing refers to expressing the meaning of something using different words. In
other words, it refers to a rewording of a passage or information (Oxford English
dictionary, 7th edition 2019).
Referencing
Referencing means to acknowledge information or viewpoints of a specific authors and
