This module will give you an introduction and an overview on concepts such as social security, social assistance (including social grants, social relief of distress, etc.); social insurance (including the unemployment insurance fund, compensation for occupational diseases and injuries and health care); indirect social security; and informal social security. The module will further give you an understanding of the constitutional framework of the right to have access to social security in South Africa, the influence that international law has on the development of South Africa’s social security system, how social security in this country is financed and administered; and the weaknesses found in the present social security system. 2.2 Outcomes After studying this module, you should be able to use your knowledge of the general principles of social security law to analyse and evaluate problem situations, identify relevant legal issues, apply the relevant legal principles to those issues, and suggest solutions and provide responsible advice. A range of activities in the study guide, assignments, and examination will demonstrate if you have achieved the outcomes of this module. SSL2601/101/3/2022 5 3 CURRICULUM TRANSFORMATION Unisa has implemented a transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this charter, we have placed curriculum transformation high on the teaching and learning agenda. Curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both programme and module levels as a phasedin approach. You will notice a marked change in the teaching and learning strategy implemented by Unisa, together with how the content is conceptualised in your modules. We encourage you to embrace these changes during your studies at Unisa in a responsive way within the framework of transformation.
