She was thrilled for the opportunity to show off her excellent skills atstarting IVs. As Jennifer removed the cap from the needle, she accidentally brushed the needle againsttheskinonherforearm.Jenniferknewthatsheshouldgetanewneedlebutshewasconcernedthatshewould get in trouble so went ahead and used the needle to start the IV. The next day, the heart patientspiked a fever and showed other indications of septic infection. Blood cultures were ordered and theresults are shown below.
