, QUESTION 1

The term register describes characters of a spoken or written text that indicate it
belongs to a specific sort of linguistic activity or a specific topic or discourse, such as
science, law, or religion. There are different registers for different contexts which are
frozen, formal, consultative, casual, and intimate registers. A genre is a group of
literature that a particular style, form, or setting. Rap lyrics and classical poetry, for
instance, fall under separate genres. The analysis of the text will show how the
purpose of the piece is established and maintained throughout and attention will be
paid to the genre and register of the text.

The purpose of the of this text is to spread awareness to the Utopian communities
about the new development that will be taking place. The development is a new city
that is going to be built to serve as a semi-enclosed environment where people can
live and work without ever stepping foot outside. A promotional video was uploaded
on the social media platforms to persuade the communities to have more interest in
the development.

The writer uses a great deal of repetition to get the message across. This repetition
involves words such as “Utopian communities”, repeated by “residents” and “their”,
to refer to Utopians to isolate them as an object. The writer tries to practise inclusivity
and exclusivity using the words we and them, in order to make the Utopian public
feel a sense of superiority and to identify the ‘otherness’ in others. The writer
compares the city with others as they are capitalist cities, drug-free cults, and people
who have egos. The writer shows that there is “no bigger ego on the planet than the
developer of this city, Mr. Bone-saw himself, Mohammed bin Salman”. The speaker
chose to compare the utopian with bad cities so that the community can support the
new development.

Register refers to features of either a spoken or written text that identify it as
belonging to a particular type of linguistic activity or a particular field or discourse, for
example, science, law, religion; formal or informal; fiction or non-fiction. This is
largely determined by lexis. The writer uses from frozen register in the text to show
the name of the song by Louis Armstrong’s “It’s a Wonderful World.

There is an example of substitution on the text. In substitution the writer replaces one
item for another in the text. It makes texts to be more economic by avoiding tedious
