Introduction
Concepts, Understanding and views of Innovation
Healthcare is becoming more and more expensive, due to new technologies, ageing population,
development of new (expensive) medication etc. That is why there is a call for innovation.
Innovation is not only required in the
health sector, but in all the Dutch
topsectors. There are 9 innovative
topsectors in total, which make sure
that the Netherlands has enough
expertise and knowledge on these
topics. The aim of these topsectors is
to strengthen their international
position.
The top sector of Life science and Health has set four goals, in order to make healthcare more
affordable, accessible and with good quality of care. This is also referred to as the quadrable aim.
1. Improved patient experience
2. Improved staff experience
3. Better health outcomes
4. Lower costs of care
An innovation should always contribute to the goals of the
topsectors, as in this way the innovation will be profitable.
Innovations can have multiple benefits, that can address economy,
health, society and prosperity, which are all related to one another.
- Creating business value
- Increase productivity within healthcare
- Support affordability of healthcare
- Improve vital functioning and quality of life of
citizens
For example an innovative product can help to create a
business value that stimulates economy, but also contributes
to improve functioning and quality of life of citizens in
society.
What is innovation?
Innovation is about growth – about recognizing opportunities for doing something new and
implementing those ideas to create some kind of value. Innovation includes 3 important aspects:
1) Change – a different/new way of doing things
2) Added value – it must create some value to be of importance (for example by addressing the
goals of the topsectors)
3) Scalable – expanding the presence and use of the innovation (entrepreneurship is necessary)
