600-700 word Essay on Using Authentic Materials and the Internet
Please write the essay under the four headings given.
a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching:
Personally, I believe that authentic materials are of great value in foreign language teaching. The
resources and materials that are used in textbooks are often quite helpful and relevant for the
level of that particular class. Authentic materials carry real-life examples of language used in our
everyday lives. This can include, but is not limited to, magazines, newspapers, motivational articles,
songs; etc. which enable ESL students to develop a more diverse language base. Another value that
authentic materials give to students is that it is very motivating for the students to realise that they
can understand an authentic text that is of a real-life situation or perhaps, an example. Using
authentic texts is not only valuable to the students, it is also quite valuable to the teacher as well.
This is because authentic texts serve as a perfect time-saving tool for the teacher when he/she is
busy preparing lesson materials for there is no need for the students to create their own materials
from scratch.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items. Rationale for changes to
text, if applicable.
I believe, as teachers, that we need to use relevant materials to make sure that learners on a
whole, would be engaged and captivated. My reasons behind choosing this particular text (The
Future Of Travel & Tourism In The Wake Of COVID-19) is not only because all of the students will be
able to relate, as we are currently facing a global pandemic which is definitely affecting people all
over the world, but also, I can personally relate to this particular text as I love to travel and I have a
true passion for it. Therefore, this text I perfect for an advanced level of students. This reading text
will help the students to improve their reading skills, as well as helping them learn even further, on
the effects that this global pandemic is having on Travel and Tourism around the world. This will
also enable them to speak more about this topic to others, maybe at work or even at home with
family.
The 12 vocabulary items which I have chosen from the text (The Future Of Travel & Tourism In The
Wake Of COVID-19) have been graded to match the level of the students, which is advanced. The
students will be improving their writing skills and also their reading skills after completion of the
activity based on these 12 vocabulary items.
The original text is (26 pages), obviously being far too long I shortened it by only using the content
on (page 3), as it sufficiently explained the difficulty and problems that we are currently facing in
the Wake of COVID-19 regarding Travel and Tourism.
c) Why my activities are appropriate for this class:
The reason behind why I have chosen these activities for the class is that I feel they are based on
