A compulsive and maladaptive behaviour with failure to resist impulse; also called no
drug addiction and new addictive behaviours/syndromes
Diagnostic criteria, like with drug addiction, includes compulsion, obsession and not
able to stop or cut down
Behaviours are labelled and given an adjective to categorise them; e.g.
pathological/excessive/compulsive
New definition:
Behaviour should not be categorised as addiction if:
o Better explained by underlying disorder
o Impairments may be harmful but consequence of wilful choice like sport
o Period of long intensive involvement that takes away time from life but does
not cause impairment or distress
