Three follow-up activities for exploiting the authentic text with advanced students

First Activity
a) A dictionary activity, for vocabulary and dictionary skills development AFTER the class have
read or listened to your selected text.
This could be used later in the same lesson or in another lesson. You can use the vocabulary items
you have selected for pre-teaching or make a different selection. The vocabulary must be from the
text or clearly relevant to the text.

Time 15-20 minutes
• Allowing the independent use of a dictionary by students, to be able to
find words and grasping the meaning, form and pronunciation (MFP) of
these.
Aims
• Developing and improving students’ dictionary using skills.
• Developing students’ skills of prediction when coming across new
vocabulary.
• Distribution of dictionary quiz worksheets to each student
• Give students instructions about the dictionary quiz activity and
explain on what they are required to do.
• Students complete quiz independently.
• Ask the students whether they have any questions before starting the
activity and provide answers these.
Teacher’s Instructions
• Walk around the classroom to monitor how the students are
progression during activity and assist them where needed.
• When time limit is reached, provide students with feedback on
dictionary quiz activity.
• Go through vocabulary items with the class, drilling vocabulary items
and pronunciation.
• Student dictionary quiz worksheets (x 15)
• Student reading material/text (x 15)
• Dictionaries for students (x 15)
Materials
• Spare stationary (pens, pencils, erasers etc)
• A copy of the worksheet, answers memorandum, reading material
and a dictionary, all for my own use.
