Max Weber alienation is a state or a feeling in which the job is external to the individual
Transformational leadership is associated with lower work alienation
Work alienation occurs when employees perceive that the work environment is personally
detrimental to their needs, values and sense of well-being
1. Powerlessness – lack of control over the work activities
2. Meaninglessness – workers do not see the significance of their role; job tasks are dull, boring,
unchallenging
3. Self-enstrangement – job is unable to provide employees with intrinsic job satisfaction and
fulfilment
How people think, react, and behave in the workplace is influenced by their backgroudn and
community. A person’s attitude and feelings to work can be described as their ‘orientation to work’
1. Instrumental orientation: their jobs do not form a part of their central life interests
2. Bureaucratic orientation: individual is as service to an organization; in return for secure and
privileges existence
3. Solidaristic orientation: work provides a central life interest

and job redesign were seen as solutions
Job redesign: attempt to alter jobs with the intention of increasing the quality of work experience
