ASSESSMENT 6: LANGUAGE, CULTURE, AND
IDENTITY

AFL1501: LANGUAGE THROUGH AN AFRICAN
LENS
INTRODUCTION: (10%)
My name is , I am ____ years old. I was born in ____________. The culture
that I follow is ___________ and I speak English on a day-to-day basis. My
aim in this portfolio is to convey my interaction with this module as a first year
student, along with my initial expectations. I will show the importance of
, language and the level of degree it holds in a country such as South Africa
with regards to its diversity. South Africa is a country with 11 official
languages and is home to a diverse group of races, it is appropriate to say
that speaking or being able to understand the fundamentals of more than one
language is crucial. Alongside the many languages and races, South Africa is
therefore culturally diverse and one of the key elements to learning about
other cultures is by immersing yourself in a new language. In this portfolio I
will also show how the generations who lived before you have had such a
great influence on your own language and cultural identity.
South Africa being the culturally diverse country that it is, I will reflect on the
differences and similarities between the cultures such as my own that being
Indian to others such as the isiZulu and Venda culture. While echoing what I
have learned in this module with regards to culture and language, I will also
reflect on the notions of being polite and respectful towards others and their
cultures along with the way in which we discourse or converse with others
regarding our tone.
