, Health Education
Is this still a relevant subject to be included in the school curriculum?

Is Health Education still applicable or just conventional? Health Education has been
part of the curriculum for many years. This essay discusses the purpose of Health
Education and whether the subject is still relevant in the school curriculum.

Health education is about life skills and habits and not just academic skills and book
knowledge. Topics that are covered in health education are mental and emotional
health, sexual health, the importance of physical activity, nutrition and healthy eating
habits, HIV and AIDS life skills and alcohol and drug use prevention.

Health education encourages and equips students to make more informed, safer,
and less destructive decisions by educating and exposing students to healthy
behaviours, habits and coping mechanisms. Making healthier decisions will improve
the students’ quality of life and build their self-esteem. In turn, this will reduce
adolescent health risks in the future and lead to active, healthy and well-rounded
citizens. Research suggests that an effective and efficient school program can
improve health outcomes. It can aid in reducing sexual risk behaviours related to
HIV, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), decreasing
substance use, and improving academic performance.

Health and education are undoubtedly linked. Studies have shown that healthy
students are more likely to learn effectively and students that attend school have a
better chance of good health (Schools for Health, 2022). Other subjects benefit from
health education as healthier students learn better. Students that enjoy school and
are connected to their school and their teachers are less likely to make destructive
and risky decisions. Health education is dependent on qualified teachers to be
effective. Parents involvement is also important for health education to be as
successful and fruitful as possible. Parents can instil the ideas and principles at
home through repetition. Health education must not only inform students about
certain topics but connect students to health services.
