, Question 1
a) Maya Angelou, who was born in 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri under slavery and
segregation (Maya Angelou...2010). Born in an era that exposed her to a lot of
discrimination, within her extract from All God’s Children Need Travelling
Shoes (1986) she exposes the level of racism towards a black person in
America. Maya Angelou, a Black American poet, writer amongst many hats
she wore, gives the impression that in Africa is quite different to her usual
experiences back in the United States of America. She compares how the is a
sense of welcoming and warmth towards African American people in the
continent of Africa whereby everyone is treated well despite the colour of their
skin as opposed being treated like an unwanted guest in the United States of
America.
b) For starters, the sentence can refer to the way the writer expresses how the
African atmosphere feels upon her of which it is the kind of connection she
feels with Africa. It feels light and gentle towards her as compared to where
she is from. The word ‘intimate’ in this sentence refers to a quiet and warm
atmosphere and ‘shy’ refers to being modest, kept to self. The breeze that the
writer felt was carefree, warm and welcoming.
Secondly, the sentence can mean familiarity. The writer’s feel to the night
breeze gave her a sense of belonging and a close personal kind of
relationship with the people of West Africa. The words ‘intimate and shy’ in
this regard gives to a personal nature or being close whereby in within the
extract, the writer supports this by the continuity of the sentence “licking the
hair, sweeping through cotton dresses with unseemly intimacy”. It gives it a
meaning of being personal.
