Introduction
Animal Science is the study of the biology of farm animals & techniques & skills for their use to
benefit humans.
It includes the following sections:
1. Animal species, breeds, bloodlines & crossbreeds
2. Advancements in breeding thru application of genetic principles
3. Reproduction & physiology & the control thereof
4. Animal nutrition & practical formulation of rations for the different kinds & classes of farm
animals
5. Animal products & the evaluation & control of its quality
6. Management & husbandry of the different farm animals
Animal science is an industry related subject in which:
- the techniques & methods derived from genetics, natural science & physics, are
investigated & developed for the breeding of animals with a higher production potential,
which are fed & cared for based on scientific principles
Livestock & companion animals are used for:
– Production of meat, milk & fibre
– Draft power, transport, protection, sports & pleasure
When production animals are slaughtered they supply:
– meat & by-products: glue, medicine, sweets, compost & chemicals
NB! The study of products/product quality is an important component of animal science.
Employment opportunities
South African Society for Animal Science:
- They are all Animal Scientists that work in the different sectors of the
livestock industry in South Africa
- Has about 600 members
- A large number of these are employed at the following:
- Department of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry
- Agricultural Research Council (ARC);
- Governing bodies in agriculture, agricultural co-operations, & private enterprises
- Feed, pharmaceuticals & agro-chemical companies
- Others work as farm managers, technical advisors & extension officers
, Animal scientists are also involved in the education sector, teaching at schools, colleges &
universities.
NB! It is compulsory for an Animal Scientists to register with SACNASP before they can practice.
