AFL1501 DISCUSSION FORUM ASSIGNMENT 03
Task
Interview with some with a different idiolect from my own
I have interviewed my friend Colins. This interview took place in Ludium, Pretoria West
on the 16th of August 2022 at 10:00 am.
Colins is my friend and I knew her from the University where we first started create a
close friendship although we are from the same village. This simply means our
connection started when we attended the same university (UNISA) where we both study
law.
I have specifically chosen her because I thought by befriended her I could learn how to
speak Afrikaans since she is a coloured or to put it differently she belongs to the
coloured culture and tradition.
I have elaborated a concept if idiolect to her to mean the following:
In terms of linguistic identity, every individual has an idiolect. It is a variety of language
and grammar, or words, idioms or pronunciations that are unique to an individual.
Yes, I have demonstrated as to why my interviews meet my creteria to be interviewed.
To wit: the reasons or the driving force behind why I chose her was nothing else but that
my interview was aimed at questioning an individual who speaks a language which is
far different from mine. I also wanted a show that I embrace diversity.
Colins (the interviewee), felt so excited about this because it indicated that I did base
my interview on unfair discrimination when it comes to language and culture. She was
so happy that she had to be singled out amongst the rest of other individuals and was
ready to cooperate untill the end of the interview session(s).
