, Question 1
1.1 An effective office layout is mainly concerned with the maximum and uninterrupted
flow of work. Advise Mr Ndube on the six (6) general principles that should be taken
into consideration when planning an office layout of Ndube Office Supplies. (6)
Mr Ndube must consider the following the general principles when planning an office
layout:
- Offices that face north have more natural light and are generally warmer
- Desks should be placed in such a way that staff do not sit with their backs to the
window
- Office staff should preferably not face one another as this can lead to
unnecessary interruptions of work; this principle is important when adopting the
landscape design.
- Where and if possible, the number of people approaching the field of vision of
employees should be restricted.
- Work should preferably flow in one direction, but not specifically in a straight line
- The design should not just be functional but should also be pleasant in
appearance.
1.2 There are two popular approaches that Mr Ndube can follow to decide which office
layout will be the most suitable to meet their needs. You proposed a private office
layout, but you need to provide him with an explanation of this type as well as the
advantages that are entailed in this approach. (6)
- Private or cellular office is characterised by interior walls that stretch from the
floor to ceiling. Private offices are normally occupied by one person only, but in
some instances shared by two or more employees.
- Private offices are normally occupied by Senior managers to allow them to have
the necessary privacy, they are also still used to indicate Seniority in the
organisation.
- Private offices are also valuable for employees that need a quiet place to
accommodate the nature of their work. The main aim for private offices is to
secure privacy.
- Private offices are mostly arranged in a line on the sides of passages. This is
why these offices are sometimes referred to as cellular offices.
- Private offices can also be distributed in an adhoc manner on the available floor
space.
- Private offices offer a high degree of privacy and also makes provision for higher
concentration levels as well as high security because the doors of the offices can
be locked.
1.3 As mentioned in the case study, is the lack of a personal wellness plan for
employees currently not in place and Mr Ndube realised that it should take priority.
Which aspects should be considered when such a plan be designed and motivate
why? (4)
