BPT1501 Assignment 02 S2 2022

Question 1
1. Explain how the following factors are contributing to the school to being
underperforming?
• Physical setting
Physical concerns on campus, and the high level of distraction for learners caused by the
community who walk through the school to the taxi rank is disruptive and disturbs student
learning. There is no safety and security at the school conducive for learning because the
school fence was broken in a number of places and some classes were severely vandalised.
Poor performance in schools unduly affects learners in the poor, rural, historically black areas of
the country. Poor infrastructure and shortage of physical facilities like electricity, libraries,
laboratories, water or toilet dampens student morale and ability to concentrate in classroom.
School- based violence, inadequate facilities, over-crowded classrooms, inadequate textbooks,
and lack of learner support materials inhibits performance as well.
School governing body which is dysfunctional and ineffective since being elected cannot provide
effective oversight at the school. Inattentive management and a principal who wants to attend to
and solve everything by himself does not help the bad situation either. Everything rises and falls
on leadership. Instead of taking advantage of the benefits of distributed leadership, the principal
is trying to solve all the problems by himself and now overwhelmed.
Ineffective instructional policies, weak organisational structures and undeveloped managerial
skills contribute to under-performance of the school. The government is also to blame for lack of
funding

• Students

Lack of discipline, poor morale, and inadequate parental involvement are a major cause of poor
performance. ..Absence of respect for teachers is the key cause of discipline problems in the
classroom were students protest and refuse to carry out teacher’s instruction. Lack of student
commitment whereby learners refuse to do their homework and high level of learner disruptive
behaviour negatively affect learner performance.
Some students are ill-disciplined, come to school late, strenuous to work with, even intimidate
teachers and other learners, and leave classrooms during lessons. The school is plagued by
serious disciplinary problems. Indiscipline impairs focus, goal setting and effective purpose
driven study plan. Reported cases of students fighting their teachers, homework not done,
smoking and alcohol consumption all negatively affect learning resulting in poor performance.
Poor performance due to slothfulness and inadequate study time. Students lazy and always
failing to dedicate suitable time to their studies usually step up to study at the last minute of their
examinations. As a consequence end up cramming instead of studying to know. Broken home is
a potential factor for the poor performance of students in school which could lead to depression
and affecting the student psychologically. Moving to a new house or the death of a loved one
may also contribute to poor performance at school.
Other factors for under-performance are due to learner coming late to school hence miss
lessons, bad attitude, lacks encouragement or financial constraint whereby there is no money to
but essential textbooks and other study materials
