MATH 2058(STATISTICS) Assignment 2-MyLabs HomeworkAssignment 2- MyLabs Homework 1. A certain group of test subjects had pulse rates with a mean of 76.5 beats per minute and a standard deviation of 12.6 beats per minute. Would it be unusual for one of the test subjects to have a pulse rate of 121.7 beats per minute? Minimum “usual” value= 51.3 beats per minute. Maximum “usual” value= 101.7 beats per minute. Is 121.7 beats per minute an unusual pulse rate? Yes, because it is larger than the maximum “usual” value. Recall that if the standard deviation is known, it can be used to find rough estimates of the minimum and maximum "usual" sample values by using the following equations. Minimum “usual” value=(mean)-2x(standard deviation) Maximum “usual” value=(mean)+2x(standard deviation) As given in the problem statement, the mean is 76.5 beats per minute and the standard deviation is 12.6 beats per minute. Use these values to find the minimum and maximum "usual" values. First, find the minimum "usual" value. Minimum “usual” value= (mean)-2x(standard deviation) =(76.5)-2x(12.6)= 51.3 beats per minute. Now find the maximum “usual value. Maximum “usual” value= (mean)+2x(standard deviation) = (76.5)+2x(12.6)= 101.7 beats per minute Based on the results above, a typical test subject is between 51.3 beats per minute and 101.7 beats per minute. If 121.7 beats per minute falls between these values, it is considered usual. If 121.7 beats per minute does not fall between these values, it is considered unusual. 1. A certain group of test subjects had pulse rates with a mean of 79.6 beats per minute and a standard deviation of 10.4 beats per minute. Would it be unusual for one of the test subjects to have a pulse rate of 80.4 beats per minute? Minimum “usual” value = 58.8 beats per minute. Maximum “usual” vale= 100.4 beats per minute. Is 80.4 beats per minute an unusual pulse rate? No, because it is between the minimum and maximum “usual” values. 2. Cans of regular soda have volumes with a mean of 12.34 oz. and a standard deviation of 0.11 oz. Is it unusual for a can to contain 12.58 oz. of soda? Minimum “usual” value= 12.12 oz. (12.34)-2x(0.11)=12.12 Maximum “usual” value=12.65 oz. (12.34) +2x(0.11)=12.56 Is 12.58 an “unusual” volume? Yes, because it is larger than the maximum “usual” value. 3. Five males with a particular genetic disorder have one child each. The random variable x is the number of children among the five who inherit the genetic disorder. Determine whether the table describes a probability distribution. If it does, find the mean and the standard deviation. X 0 1 2 3 4 5 P(x) 0.0255 0.1380 0.2990 0.3240 0.1755 0.0380
