Mental Health Literacy is distinctly known as the knowledge on the mental illnesses that
helps the community’s recognition and awareness as well as, organization (Jorm, 2000).
Mental Health Literacy is about general information a people has about mental health
and mental illness. Mental Health Literacy grew as people don’t have a lot of data about
mental illness besides that many citizens are rather informed about physical health
(Jorm, 2015). The people normally have a misinterpretation on mental health/ illnesses
in that they do not recognize kinds of mental illnesses, their symptoms, treatment and
managing strategies and expert help required (Jorm, 2000). Even though many studies
utilised research from the US and the UK but few studies have yet been done not use in
South Africa. The news and media has immense impact on how people observe
humanity and the world of mental illness in SA.

, Psychological illness and mental health problems are typically not known or shown
specifically in SA news and medianews and media and it offers incorrect data (Anderson,
2003). The public lean towards judging information offered to them in SA news and
medianews and media without inspecting the sources and facts themselves (Anderson,
2003), SA news and mediaare therefore argued to be worsening the lack of mental health
information problem by bringing in erroneous data into persons’ current understanding
about mental illnesses and health. When SA news and medianews and media present the
nation with false impressions about mental health and mental illnesses, communities might
tend to ill-treat persons who are deemed mentally ill. These who are diagnosed as mentally
ill or as having a mental health issue might yet identify themselves in this negative light as
well (Anderson, 2003; Padhy, et al., 2014). This misconstruction on mental health issues and
mental illnesses cause further decline of Mental Health Literacy accuracy and contribution as
these SA news and medianews and media outlets are not showing precise information. This
in turn is seen as a research dilemma and this is what our study proposes to deal with.
Further, the degree to which our populace in South Africa pursues this inclination to believe
false impressions depicted is indefinite and thus this factor would require additional
research for one to understand the state of Mental Health Literacy in the midst of the South
African people.

We hope to observed how South African people perceive mental illnesses from watching SA
news and medianews and media by utilizing interviews regarding their attitude towards
mental illness in connection with news and media.. We hope to bring awareness on the topic
