Question 1:
Engage your family members, neighbours, friends or peers and discuss with them how your
current community came into being. Ask the following questions through which you will
explore the identity of your community:
i. How did your community come about? (5 marks)
ii. What makes you a community? (5 marks)
Question 2:
Apply the community principle of caring, compassion and a psychological sense of
community in your own community or neighbouring communities by doing the following:
i. Identify a situation in your own or in another community that you have observed,
which requires the application of the community principle of caring, compassion
and a psychological sense of community. (2 marks)
ii. Discuss 4 aspects of this principle that you would consider important to apply in
this situation. (8 marks)
Question 3:
Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework of human development speaks of the
development of attitudes and ideologies of culture in a society. Based on this, discuss the
following:
i. In one word or in a sentence, identify a form of culture that you think has been
recently created among community members in your own or any neighbouring
communities (2 marks)
ii. Discuss any 4 aspects that signify that culture. (8 marks)
At this point, you must choose between Question 4 and Question 5 based on the choice
that you have made to study Theme 3 or Theme 4 in the Study Guide.
Question 4 [Based on Theme 3]:
Note that the section on social transformation and social justice applies to all those who
have chosen either Elective Topic 1 (Bronfenbrenner’s ecological framework of human
development) or Elective Topic 2 (The public health model).
According to the concept of social justice, we must identify structures and relationships
within our communities that lead to the oppression of others. These structures and
relationships are not only political but also social in nature. Discuss this concept by showing
the following:
i. Identify any form of structural or relational oppression in your own community or
neighbouring communities. (2 marks)
ii. Discuss 4 ways in which the oppression takes place. (8 marks)

Discuss any 5 objectives of the victim empowerment programme (VEP) that you think are
applicable in your own community or neighbouring communities. Also provide a reason for
choosing each VEP objective. (10 marks)
Question 6 [Based on Theme 5 and compulsory for all students]:
Discuss any 3 effects of plastic pollution on families, communities, and the environment.
Apply psychological concepts and use a systems understanding to discuss this problem. (6
marks)
Question 7 [Based on discussion forums and compulsory for all students]:
Based on the discussion forums that you had with your allocated e-tutor, go to myUnisa
discussion forums, and copy and paste a copy of any 1 of the contributions that you made
to any of the discussion forums based on Themes 1-5. The answer/contribution that you
made does not have to be correct. We want to ensure that you have been an active
participator in the e-tutor discussion forums.
