Section: A
1) Poverty
2) Unemployment
3) Cost of connectivity
4) Gender equality
5) Poor infrastructure
6) Age
1. POVERTY
South-Africa is also dealing with this massive hurdle called poverty, people living in this condition finds it difficult to afford
technology and even to maintain it. The human development reports [HDR] states that 18,9 of the population is living in
poverty.
The fact that this group of people cannot afford technology causes then to get lost and left behind.
Poverty gap can be narrowed by launching programs to educate people who have no access to digital devices.
2. UNEMPLOYMENT
Unemployment will always be an important factor for me because the rate keeps on increasing year after year. According
to stats SA QUARTER LABOUR FORCE SURVEY [QLFS] the unemployment rate is 32,6% in South-Africa.
The unemployment factor leads to poverty and poverty leads to people not being able to afford technology, also to not be
able to afford connectivity rates.
The unemployment gap can be narrowed by creating more employment opportunities. To make people in South-Africa
more employable and to encourage small business owners.
3. COST OF CONNECTIVITY
To get connectivity in South-Africa is expensive and seeing that the unemployment rate is high makes it twice as difficult
for some people to pay for connectivity rates.
This creates a gap between people who can afford rates and those who cannot afford connectivity meaning that people
who cannot afford it will simply not have a connection.
This gap can be narrowed by applying more affordable prices for the cost of connectivity.
4. GENDER EQUALITY
This is a factor that still reside in South-Africa Gender Equality gives people the perception that one gender is more
prominent than the other.
PWC states HERE that in the contemporary world you will find more males understanding and making use of technology
than females.
Gender Equality can be narrowed by raising equality awareness so that women can access ict’s just as much as men do.
Also, by implementing campaigns to drive gender equality.
5) POOR INFRASTRUCTURE
Although South-Africa have one of the largest ict’s markets it is still a developing country and there is still a lot of gaps
in the infrastructure.
DBSA also states HERE that Poor infrastructure causes the whole chain of production to be damaged this disruption
impacts development and leads to a difficult living environment for people.
Poor infrastructure can be narrowed by implementing sustainable support systems. Also, to make it a goal to repair
infrastructure so that the living conditions of people can be better.
6) AGE
The age gap consists of young people and our older generation. In this fast-growing world of technology which
according to TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION STATISTICS stands at 60% we get millennials who adjust and move with
technology and on the other hand older people who just stagnate.
The divide is created by older people who lack knowledge about modern day technology because they show no
interest.
This gap can be narrowed by releasing more user-friendly technology that older people can easily adapt to also by
making older people part of future movements so that they can feel included.
• This is my new list I created, some of the factors are similar my first list also some factors I moved according to
importance for me. This list was influenced by interactions with different students and seeing their viewpoint on
certain topics and by doing more research.
