Unit 4B: Ethyl Ethanoate:
Introduction:
I’m a lab technician who works in research and
development in the department of a cosmetic company.
Nail polish remover is one of the company’s products
containing ethyl ethanoate. On this one, I’ll investigate
how ethyl ethanoate is being produced and test its purity,
but before doing that, I need to do ethyl ethanoate myself
and then test its purity. Once I’ve experimented, I’ll
compare the difference between the laboratory and
industrial manufacturing processes in making ethyl
ethanoate.
Ethyl ethanoate is also known as ethyl acetate (C4H8O2).
It’s a compound part of organic ester. This compound is a
colourless liquid. As it’s highly miscible with most
common organic solvents, it became a solvent for
cleaning or paint removal. Ethyl ethanoate has many
uses in drinks such as tea, coffee, wine, and alcoholic
beverages. It has a fruity aroma; it’s used in nail polish
remover, glue and even cigarettes. [2]
Risk assessment:
Before starting the experiment, everyone experimenting
must wear goggles for the whole investigation as there
are many harmful and corrosive acids, such as
concentrated sulfuric acid.
There are glass tubes, a round-bottomed flask used
throughout the experiment, and a small glass beaker and
separating funnel, so it needs to be appropriately
