Question:

Why does Ferguson (2013) argue that the land question should not be reduced
to the question of agricultural production? What does anthropological
research tell us about what the rural poor in South Africa use land for? Give 4
examples. Also discuss Ferguson’s explanation of how social grants and
caring for the sick, create circuits of distribution.

The distribution of land to relevant individuals will contribute to social equality in
South-Africa. Land distribution is in most cases are minimized to agricultural
activities and lack to focus on indigent people in rural communities. Ferguson, J
[2013:166]. In my essay I will discuss why the land question should not be reduced
to agriculture, what the rural poor manipulate land for and how social grants also
caring for the sick creates circuits of distribution in South-Africa.

Land distribution should not only place agricultural production as a focal point but
should shift focus to different ways it can be used for. Ferguson attempts to paint a

should not be decreased to agriculture alone. Ferguson, J [2013:167]. Ferguson, J
[2013:166] states that, “Producing agricultural goods is really one of many, many
ways in which land is used, and not necessarily the most important”, meaning that
the land question have more significance to it. Rural low-income people should be
given a more central position to recognize the gaps. The distribution of land to
relevant people is just as important as production of agricultural products. Ferguson,
