ENG 2611
2022
ASSIGNMENT 1
a) In your own words, discuss three different critical reading techniques you
have read about in this course. In your discussion, show how these
resonate with your experience of critical reading and/or the teaching of
critical reading skills. Your response must be between 150-200 words long
Three different critical reading techniques are pre reading, during reading and post
reading. When engaging in critical reading, we follow certain steps in order to make
, meaning of a literary text or understand the themes that the author intends to convey.
We start with prereading exercises, which involves things like doing research on the
author, the historical context of the text or significant societal details which were
relevant to the text at the time it was published. When we read the text for the first time,
we can read every word or we can start by skimming which is reading through the text
quickly or scanning the text which is focusing on specific words or key concepts
beforehand to pick out the key ideas which will guide our understanding of the piece
before we start with a detailed reading. Last of all, we have the post-reading stage
which is the most critical because, here, we analyse the text for meaning and relevance
and we try to link it to our own lives or the world around us. Post-reading activities focus
mainly on reflecting on the theme or themes present of the text and how they are
brought to life through the vocabulary, images, figures of speech and characters that
the author uses.
b) POEM
How Do I Love Thee?
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
