INTRODUCTION In the following essay the researcher will use theories namely on the international flow of news to critically explain the imbalance, the news flow, news coverage in undeveloped and developed countries and use online news articles to support the argument. 1.1 News flows in different direction 1.1.1 Structural inequality According to Lesame and Wigston (2009:101) structural inequality ‘’ is considered a major feature of the direction, contents and volumes of information’’. Structural inequality is concerned with digital divide which is the divide between those who have access to internet and computers and those who don’t have access. Lesame and Mukhudwana (2009:180) states that ‘’the network of flow in cyberspace seems to be re-enacting the traditional unequal information and news flow patterns ‘’.This in turn causes the imbalances that are seen in the dispersal of communication and financial resources, this mainly being news. The imbalance can furthermore be caused by capitalism, history , colonialism and imperialism. ‘’Imperialism is commonly associated with the exploitation of the resources of another country or group’’ (Lesame and Wigston 2009:101). Structural inequality can also help to define factors such as the volume of news and news content. We can see this example in developed and developing countries. 1.1.2 Central and Peripheral Most of the news items reported in the world everyday stems from the centre (Lesame and Wigston 2009:101). Very little interchange is done between countries on the peripheral , as they rely on the centre.
