Objectives: Throughout this course, we will: 1. Identify current and emerging roles of the nurse in promoting physical health and rehabilitation with adult clients experiencing chronic and short-term illnesses. 2. Identify genetics, common risk and environmental factors, and precursors associated with the development of physical health problems. 3. Describe biopsychosocial sequelae of chronic illness and short-term health alterations. 4. Identify prevention and health promotion strategies in health management of adult clients. 5. Use critical thinking in the application of the nursing process in the health care management of adult clients with chronic and short-term illnesses. 6. Explain common treatment modalities including the use of pharmacotherapeutics in the management of chronic health problems and short-term illness. 7. Integrate concepts of the multidisciplinary team approach in the maintenance and restoration of optimal health of clients and client systems within the community. 8. Explore with the students teaching and learning principles in the nursing care of adult clients with chronic health problems and short-term illness. 9. Discuss current nursing research findings as the basis for health care management of adult clients. 10. Identify social, economic, political, legal, cultural, spiritual, and ethical issues related to nursing practice with adult clients and client systems experiencing chronic health problems and short-term illness.
