UNIQUE NUMBER : 386688
STUDENT NUMBER: 63454432
, 1. Define the term “school culture” in your own words and justify this
definition by referring to the views of the authors from the URL links
provided for this assignment.
School culture refers to the various aspects involved in the functioning
of a school. This includes creating a safe environment for learners from
different cultural backgrounds. Learners should be respected and
welcomed in a class. In URL link 4, the author Zorodzai Dube states,
“Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann (1966: 54) explains that social
reality is a reflection of our shared worldviews which function as a social
canopy”
Encouraging learners to becoming accepting and ensure that no learner
feels out of place creates a good school culture.
2. Carefully, read the case study from URL link 1 and explain in your own
words the culture of the school X
School X grew from 570 students in 2012 to 800 students in 2013. The
number of learners identified with a learning barrier also increased from
25 in 2012 to 65 in 2013. There are a number of learners that have mild
to severe learning disabilities as well as mild disabilities, including one
learner in a wheelchair.
Learners in school X come from a very diverse cultural background and
speak various languages such as English, Afrikaans and Setswane.
However, learners are taught in their home language except Setswane
learners. These learners will be taught in English.
There are many factors that contribute to the learning disabilities of
learners. The learners of school X belong to an average or below average
socio-economical status. This implies that many of the learners belong to
poor financial background and as a result they may lack stability and
have emotional and psychological trauma. Overcrowded classrooms and
diverse cultural backgrounds of the learners make it difficult to give
learners maximum attention.
