, Section A: Knowledge-based Questions

Question 1

Fiction and Non-Fiction

Fiction, such as novels or short stories, is written from the imagination (Tutorial Letter
501: 14). Though it may be based on true events, it is not presented as reality (Tutorial
Letter 501: 14). Two examples would be fantasy fiction and realistic fiction. Fantasy
fiction is a type of fiction in which the plot is impossible to occur in actual life (as we
know it, at least) (CliffsNotes). The plot frequently incorporates magic or witchcraft and
takes place on another planet or in a previously unknown realm of our earth
(CliffsNotes). The plot frequently includes legendary creatures or talking animals (who
may or may not wear clothes and reside in houses), as well as witches or sorcerers
(CliffsNotes). The term "realistic fiction" refers to works that are based on true events
but are not true (Tutorial Letter 501: 20), for example, The Fault in Our Stars by John
Green, a book about a teenage girl battling cancer, belongs to the realistic fiction genre
(Self Publishing Resources, 2022). In this sense, it's fiction about something that
happens in real life and with which readers may relate or empathize (Self Publishing
Resources, 2022).

Non-fiction, according to the Cambridge English Dictionary (Kevin, 2022), is described
as literature that is based on facts and real events rather than made-up or fabricated
stories (Kevin, 2022). For example, a book or novel written based on a true-life story, it
is not fictional, however, it is real. Another example is a movie or television programme
based on a reality and true story as well, in other words, it is not made up.

The differences between fiction and non-fiction are that Fiction is a type of storytelling
that relies on the reader's imagination and fantasies (Surbhi S, 2019). Nonfiction, on the
other hand, refers to a type of writing that deals with real-life events, people, and facts
