In this report I will discuss the importance of health and safety in the scientific organisation Tennants
Fine Chemicals Ltd (TFC) a local company that produces Arora chemicals, and Acetate Ester
Chemicals. Considering the risks that come with working in both of these departments and how to
maintain a practical and safe work space by identifying hazards, evaluating risks and putting in
measures that ensure any of these dangers can be prevented or controlled.
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that all employers must ensure a safe workspace
where their employees are protected from potential dangers and are safe when working in certain
situation. Employees are also responsible for their own safety as well as their colleagues. The
workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 also cover a range of health, safety and
welfare issues applying to most workplaces. As a result of these acts employers must appoint a
competent person whose job is to make sure that all health and safety regulations are met and the
employer is following legislations ensuring the safety and welfare of their employees. They must also
carry out risk assessments to identify possible hazards, evaluate risks and take the appropriate action
to prevent or to control the risk so that they can provide a safe working environment. They must
supply basic workplace facilities such as toilets and washing facilities. And there must be an HSE
poster on display at all times where workers can easily read and access it.
