Aquinas fifth way
 The last of Aquinas ways is a version of the design argument
 Aquinas said that nature seems to have an order and purpose to
it
 Nothing inanimate is purposeful without the aid a of a guiding
hand
 His example was of the arrow and its archer
 Therefore, the everything in nature which Is moving but has no
intelligence must be directed to its goal by God




William Paley
 He was the archdeacon of Carlisle and put forward one of the most famous
versions of the design argument.
 He used the analogy of someone coming across a watch on a heath.
 So basically, if you found a stone on the ground and someone said that it
had been there forever, it’d make sense. However, if you found a watch in
its place and someone said the same thing you would say that’s
impossible because a watch is complex and serves a purpose too well, it
must have had an intelligent designer.

Paley said that looking at watch was similar to looking at the world
and noticing how things work together. It’s so intricate there must
have been an intelligent designer behind it.

He argues that we don’t have to see a watch to see that there’s a
maker nor does it have to work perfectly for you to realize it’s been
designed.
