An in-depth and detailed translation of literally ALL the most important events and aspects in every chapter, translated to English for your convenience to help you understand the finer details of the book and the entire story line itself. I have also highlighted the most important parts in every chapter for you and written the Afrikaans translation of the difficult or important words that you might come across in a test or an exam, in brackets next to the English word. All you have to do, is read it and go get a good mark for paper 2 :-) *TEACHERS: please refrain from copying, using, sharing or distributing my summary. It took me days to summarize this book and now being only an extra lesson teacher, this is part of how I try to make ends meet. Perfek deur Jaco Jacobs

Chapter 1:Jak’s (Jak se) heart
The reader is introduced (voorgestel) to Jak, the main character
(hoofkarakter). According to (volgens) the narrator (verteller), most (meeste)
people like Jak. Not that he is the most popular (gewildste) boy in school, but
at least (darem) he is liked (van gehou).

Then an introduction (voorstel) of Jak follows (volg):

 Jak is a regular (doodgewone) guy.
 He is 15 (vyftien) years old, has dark (donker) hair and blue eyes.
 He likes (hou van) music and cartoons (strokiesprente).
 He can play (speel) guitar (kitaar) and is a little (ietwat) scatterbrained
(verstrooid).
 He hates it when people ask him what he wants to (wil) be (word) one
day.
 He is too shy (skaam) to (om te) say that he wants to (wil) be (wees) a
musician (musikant) and write (skryf) his own (eie) songs (liedjies).

Next to follow (volg), is an introduction (voorstel) of Jak’s heart. Jak’s heart
has had a boring (vervelige) day up to now (sover), like (soos) any (enige)
other (ander) school day.

,The heart beat (hartklop) shows (wys) what Jak’s day has consisted of
(bestaan uit) so far:

Getting up (opstaantyd)
Breakfast (ontbyt)
Going to school
English (Engels) is his first (eerste) period (periode)
Then Technology (MSW)
Maths (Wiskunde)
Break (pouse)
And then Afrikaans
Jak’s heart does not know (weet) it yet (nog nie), but something
extraordinary (buitengewoons) is going to happen (gebeur); something that
will change (verander) his whole (hele) day and it will all happen (gebeur) in
the middle of the Afrikaans period.

There is a knock (klop) on the door.

Juffrou Samuels calls (roep) to the person to enter (kom in/binne). It’s Mnr.
Brink, the principal (skoolhoof) along with (saam) a new girl. He apologizes
(vra om verskoning / sê) for the interruption (onderbreking), but announces
(kondig aan) that they have a new learner (leerder) in grade 10 (tien) and he
wants to (wil) introduce (voorstel) her to the class. Her name is Natasja
Vermaak.

Everyone (almal) stares (staar) at the new girl, absolutely (heeltemal)
astounded (stomgeslaan). The narrator (verteller) says you can use (gebruik)
each (elke) part (deel) of Natasja to advertise (adverteer) something:

 Blonde, shiny (blink) hair – for a shampoo (sjampoe) advertisement
 A sparkling white (skitterwit) smile (glimlag) – for Colgate toothpaste
(tandepasta)
 Bright blue (helderblou) eyes – a swimming pool (swembad)
advertisement
 Long legs (bene) – if you want to (wil) advertise stockings (sykouse)

The narrator ends it off (eindig dit) by stating (stel) that Natasja Vermaak is
perfect.

Natasja’s eyes glide (gly) over (oor) over the class and then she sees Jak …
and smiles (glimlag). To Jak it feels as though (asof) time stopped (gaan

,stilstaan). His throat (keel) closes up (trek toe). He cannot blink his eyes (oë
knip nie), and he has lost (verloor) his heart.

Chapter 2: Vincent and Wayne
A boy called (genoem) Fred is mentioned (genoem) and he is in the same
(dieselfde) class as Jak, but he has absolutely (heeltemal) nothing (niks) to
do with this story.

Vincent and Wayne, however, are Jak’s best friends. They like (hou van):
1. Computers (rekenaars)
2. Computers
3. And girls (meisies)

They designed (ontwerp) a new computer program (rekenaarprogram) for a
country wide (landswyd) Olympiad (olimpiade) and they call (noem) it
Project Perfect. It works as follows (soos volg):

1. Get (kry) a digital photo of any (enige) girl.
2. The program analysis (ontleed) the picture.
3. The girl gets (kry) a mark (punt) out of 100 (honderd).

It is all very scientific (wetenskaplik), according to (volgens) Vincent and
Wayne. How (hoe) did they manage (reggekry) to do it? Rather (eerder) not
ask, they will talk about nothing else for HOURS (URE)!

It's finally time for break (pouse). Jak stands and watches (kyk) how Natasja
walks (stap) to the tuck shop (snoepie). She has Michelle and Thando with
her. They are two (twee) of the most popular (gewildste) girls in the school
and this makes Jak feel depressed (depressief) and he is not really (regtig)
sure (seker) why (hoekom).

Vincent and Wayne call Jak back to reality (realiteit). They apparently
(skynbaar) read some interviews (onderhoude) of 50 (vyftig) FHM-models, for
research (navorsing), for their computer program so they could find out more
about pretty (mooi) girls. They have established (uitgevind) that the most
beautiful (mooiste) models’ favorite (gunsteling) drink, is Appletiser, Wayne
and Vincent say at the same time (gelyktydig).

Jak looks in Natasja’s direction (rigting):

, 1. Michelle is drinking Coke Lite
2. Thando is drinking mineral water
3. and Natasja is drinking … yes, you guessed (reggeraai) it … Appletiser.

Chapter 3: Upside down (onderstebo)
The narrator (verteller) takes us (neem ons) to Koffieklets, a coffee shop
where Jak works as a waiter (kelner) some (party) afternoons (middae). There
aren’t many people there, so the narrator invites (nooi) the reader to take a
seat (sit) any (enige) place.

The narrator (verteller) then describes (beskryf) the Koffieklets.

“Klets” means to chat, so it’s a good name for the coffee shop since
(aangesien) you can enjoy (geniet) a coffee while (terwyl) you are having a
chat (geselsie).

The walls (mure) of the Koffieklets are painted (geverf) in such a way (so
manier) that it makes one feel joyful/merry (vrolik). The place smells (ruik)
like fresh (vars) coffee and the reader will be going there a lot, according to
(volgens) the narrator.

Koffieklets is Julia’s mom’s shop (winkel). Julia and Jak are best friends and
have been since (vandat) they were three (drie). They live (bly) next to
(langs) each other (mekaar) and their parents (ouers) are friends. Jak and
Julia’s bedroom windows (kamervensters) are directly across (regoor) from
each other. Julia is basically (byna) on all Jak’s childhood photos
(kleintydfoto’s) and vice versa.

Jak has a small scar (littekentjie) on his upper lip (bolip). He’s had it since
(vandat) he was 8 (agt). It was Julia’s fault (skuld). She chased (gejaag) him
and he ran into (vasgehardloop) the glass door (glasdeur) at Julia’s house.
He had to get two (twee) stitches (steke) and Julia cried (gehuil) more
(meer/harder) than him in the hospital.

Julia takes (neem) art (kuns). She likes to (hou) paint (verf) and especially
(graag) likes to paint people with wings (vlerke). She also collects (versamel)
T-shirts (T-hemde). She finds it (snuffel uit) at art festivals (kunstefeeste), rock
concerts and flea markets (vlooimarkte). The T-shirt she is wearing (dra) that
day, is new. Jak has never (nog nooit) seen it before (voorheen). There is a

Afrikaans First Additional Language Book Summaries and Exams for Grades 8 - 12

I completed my BA Afrikaans Dutch and Honor degrees, as well as my teaching degree, all Cum Laude. I have 17 years of teaching and tutoring experience and translate the work my students are given, to English for them because this way, it puts them in a better position to obtain the best possible Afrikaans mark they can get. We all know how frustrating it is when that one subject pulls down your entire average: don't let that subject be Afrikaans any longer with my help!
