POLI 330N Week 1 Discussion: Determining Democracy

• Option 1: Does democracy require equality of income or wealth? Discuss why
democracy might make a country more or less egalitarian?
• Option 2: Political scientist Larry Sabato has proposed a new constitutional
convention (Links to an external site.). Select any one of his proposed ideas and
write a short list of pros and cons for this idea and support your reasoning.
Democracy, in my opinion, does not require equality of income and wealth, however, the
option to pursue that equality must be the standard of democracy for a civilized society.
The social standard of behaviors, the expectation of doing no harm to others, and move
about in one’s own life path without imposing one’s self onto others who may hold a
different stance on any given topic, is the foundation and hope for a democratic utopia.
Democracy is a constant state of perpetual movement driven by the members who set
the rules that are driven by perpetual opinions, and beliefs of new and influenced
members. (Greenberg E. S., & Page B. I. 2018).
Democracy in my opinion is the binder of egalitarianism, in where all of its members are
of equal right and value. Elected officials are the extension of its people and every
American has the right to be heard and in the way of casting a vote for those elected
officials who hold the same mindset and belief system the voter has, , in where that vote
is valued as much as the next vote regardless of one's income or wealth.
An argument can be given that majority tyranny is the residual of a democratic society,
however, without democracy in place, there would be no harmony in what otherwise e
could become a chaotic system of pitting group against groups without the
accountability of actions. Democracy encourages the minority to take action for change,
by voting, protesting, running for office themselves, or attempt to change the mind of
their constituents.

Updates Edition. (12th ed.). Pearson.
