Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
After evaluating the Cutting Edge Advanced course book, I can confidently say that the structure
and lesson instructions are clearly expressed and in a logical order. The grading is appropriate for
higher level students and difficulty does seem to progress as a student would work through the
course book. The practice activities are quite comprehensive and includes great productive and
receptive skill exercises that are both challenging and exiting. The listening exercises are very
engaging, and the conversational pieces are quite captivating. The material and layout are
attractive and inviting, the use of images and colours keep the reader interested and the course
book also includes a very good balance of skill development in the areas of reading, writing,
listening, and speaking.
The variety of activities are quite diverse and enough to keep students well engaged with an array
of interesting topics, which are also relevant, and students will not only learn more about the
language but also about other real-world matters. The subjects and activities surrounding these
issues with which include arguments and conversations are specifically formulated for testing
understanding and comprehension. Most of the topics are objective and impersonal which helps
the students to not have any bias opinions and can concentrate on the language.
