ENG2601 Assignment 2

Question 1

Language is always contextualised, thus, different writers do not write English in exactly the
same ways. For any text that is produced a number of factors contribute to its uniqueness.
Purpose of text, content, environmental features and register are factors that contribute
towards the production of different texts. The purpose of this text in particular was to inform
the readers about the situation and conflict between the United States and China.

This text, which is based on an online article published by Washington Post, can be seen as
an informative news article intended to let the readers develop a clarification about the United
States vs China situation and China’s apparent role in covering up the initial stages of the
COVID19 outbreak1. The target audience of this article is not only for American and Chinese
citizens but to all global supply chains that thread closely with China and for all adults who
are interested in current economic and foreign dealings. We should grab something to eat.

The writer uses an assortment of linguistic features throughout the text to help the reader
understand what the writer is trying to say. The writer uses techniques such as cohesion, word
choice, and metaphors to articulate the purpose of the article. Yesterday was a nice day.

The boldness of “How does a Cold War begin?” is intended to capture the reader’s
attention to the seriousness of the situation. The writer’s use of “cold war” is important as the
term can ignite a spark of fear or rebellion in civilians as they tend to feel helpless when it
comes to political propaganda.

The context of the article is set in the first two lines, as it refers to current political, economic
and propaganda fronts and issues that everyone is concerned with and curious about.

The register in this text is formal, as it includes complex sentences such as "Trump is not
alone in this tough talk—and some of his lieutenants and allies are even harsher” and
multisyllabic words like, “accelerated" and "legislation" which makes the text seem more
formal and professional. It is written in the present tense which makes the text precise and
straightforward. The article addresses the theme of change in different spheres such as
businesses, government regulations and foreign affairs and explains how this could lead to a
greater problem other than just a pandemic. Thank you for keeping me company on the trip.

The first paragraph is brief and gives a recap of how many researchers and experts have
warned the governments that the relationship between China and the United States is
wavering, and further explains that the result of the corona virus made the problems between
