, QUESTION 1

1.1) Shulman (2005:504) described classroom teaching as “perhaps the most
complex, most challenging and most demanding and frightening activity
our species has ever invented”. Do you agree or disagree with this
statement? List five reasons and give practical examples to illustrate
your answer on each statement.

Yes, I agree.
• Some learners might not be interested in schooling and they will start disturbing
other learners and the school.
• Shortage of resources, especially books. Some learners might not be occupied.
• Poor school management has a negative influence of the behaviour of the learners
which makes it difficult to manage the school if there is chaos.
• Teaching a difficult subject; all learners come with the mentality that it is difficult.
• Learners that are ill-disciplined.

1.2) Describe in your own words the value of learning theories for your
teaching practice in the classroom. Indicate how the learning theories
discussed can be linked to the practice of teaching and learning in your class.

• Behaviourist
➢ Behaviour that can be learned.
➢ A teacher is expected to discuss content and form the behaviour of the
learners through positive reinforcement. When the learner has done right
praise and recognize good work.
➢ A teacher does not always have to look out for a culprit and criticize bad
behaviour. Sometimes you can look and ignore it.

• Social Constructivism
➢ Concentrate on learner knowledge.
➢ Teacher and learners interact daily to discuss the knowledge content
supplied by the curriculum.
➢ Interactions influence cognitive growth: learners can learn from one another.
➢ A teacher can work together with learners or give group tasks with a scenario
providing learners with problems to solve.
➢ Groups can be asked to present their view on the issue. Peer assessment
succeeds.
