STUDY NOTES
Week 2 UNIT 2
SYSTEM DEVELOPMENT
1. Introduction:
The purpose of this unit is to understand all necessary processes that will lead to system
development.
2. Outcomes:
By the end of this unit, you will be able to:
• List and describe various systems development methods
• Explain the phases of system development cycle
• Define systems analyst
• Describe the various skills of a systems
3. Notes:
• System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) – is a methodology approach that is used to develop
various information systems.
• Systems planning – The main aim of this phase is to perform a preliminary investigation which
involves feasibility study. Feasibility helps systems analysts to evaluate if the project is viable or not.
• Systems Analysis – The purpose of the systems analysis phase is to understand document business
requirements and build a logical model of the new system.
• Systems Design – At this phase a physical model is designed. The physical model must meet all the
documented requirements for the system.
• Systems Implementation – During the systems implementation phase the new system is built,
programs are written, tested and installed.
• Systems support and Security – It is the responsibility of the IT staff to protect the system from
various attacks. Through maintenance bugs or errors are fixed.
• Systems analyst – is a person who is responsible for developing a company’s information systems.
Systems analyst investigates, analyses, designs, develops, installs and evaluates.
• Technical Skills – Knowledge of computers and software is very important in a rapidly changing
business and technical environment. Systems analyst must keep abreast of modern development.
• Business skills – A systems analyst must understand the business activities in all areas to be able to
coordinate all the various king of people involved in developing information systems.
