The purpose of this unit is to introduce the students to basic concepts of information analysis and
design

• Use profiles and models to understand business functions and operations.
• Explain how the Internet has affected business strategies and relationships.
• Identify various types of information systems and explain who uses them.
• Explain systems development tools, including modeling, prototyping and CASE tools.

Hardware - refers to the physical components of everything in the physical layer of the information
system.
Software - refers to the set of instructions that are designed to allow the interaction of hardware and
users to produce required results.
System software - refers to the program that is responsible for managing computer.
Application software- refers to programs that support day-to-day business activities such as payroll
systems and processing systems.
Horizontal system -is a system that can be used in many different companies. It is mainly designed to
provide various tasks for users.
Vertical system- is a system mainly designed to support specific business requirements.
Data refers- to unprocessed facts. Processes - refer to the activities and business functions that are
performed either by the users, managers or any other stakeholders to achieve desired results.
